Recognizing and appreciating employees can boost morale and make them feel valued. However, in extreme times—such as during the pandemic—this is all the more important. The grim nature of our lives and the lockdown have taken a toll on everyone; even carrying out everyday activities can seem arduous sometimes.
On top of that, work from home (WFH) brings its own set of struggles and challenges. While your employees are busy juggling responsibilities and meeting these challenges, lauding them for their efforts can boost motivation and make work a little easier.
- 1.) Maintain interaction using technology
With WFH, employees no longer have the same level of interaction with employers and colleagues. This fosters feelings of loneliness and makes work boring and laborious. Encourage the use of technology to allow employees to socialize and unwind during work hours. Set up virtual meeting rooms to allow employees to work together in teams, as they would have in the office.
Work hasn’t stopped, and celebrations shouldn’t either. Connect to review work highlights, celebrate milestones and successes, and applaud everyone. This will mirror the sense of community the workplace provides and will give employees something to look forward to.
- 2.) Trust employees and offer support
Considering prevailing conditions, productivity is bound to be lower. A fair number of distractions accompany WFH, slowing down progress and affecting performance. Internet connection issues, communication lag, etc. all contribute to daily challenges.
In such times, it’s important to be empathetic. Trust your employees to give their best and offer support however you can. You can tweak work hours and allow time flexibility to ensure work doesn’t stop.
The faith you display—as opposed to pressuring them with stricter deadlines—will motivate them to do their job on time. - 3.) Show gratitude by giving
In a troubled economy amidst declining revenue, bonuses might be difficult to give out. But monetary rewards may not be the only way to thank your employees.
You can send out care packages as tokens of appreciation and gratitude. Provide options for counseling, medical advice, and aid to address any medical concerns raised. You can also extend benefits to employees’ families, as they too have become honorary members of your workplace due to WFH.
Campaigning for change, well-being, and appreciation for your employees in this hour of need will help set you up for success. Employees will actively engage to ensure that work goes on and that there are minimum obstacles on the road to success.
